Even though we’ve reached the end of the road this year, we’ll still be on our toes in Groveport Madison.

We’re gladly keeping our doors a jar for students enrolled in our summer school offerings and those who will take advantage of our Summer Food Service Program.

The lunches will fill hungry stomachs and warm the hearts of many. City Council member Donna Drury started the initiative in 2008 and it has grown so significantly we hope to offer more than 2,000 meals over the course of the next several weeks.

A free lunch will be offered to those 18 and under at the Junior High and Middle School North and at three new satellite locations: in the Three Rivers subdivision and the Dunloe Elementary and Independence Village shelter houses. We will also open the gym at the Junior High for 45 minutes a day before lunch so children have an extra place to play.

The Summer Lunch program is a federally funded program that fills such an important need in our community. Data from KidsOhio.org show that 54 percent of students in the district are considered economically disadvantaged, an increase of more than 20 percent in just five years. I am pleased our community is doing it’s part to help.

Summer school can also fill a void. Some of the courses offer a chance for needed intervention to help them catch up while other classes give our students the opportunity to extend their learning during break.

This year, we will provide a range of classes for students at all levels. They are:
  • Summer Transition for incoming 9th graders struggling with math and/or reading
  • Ohio Graduation Test Intervention and Testing
  • Summer School/Credit Recovery at Cruiser Academy
  • Enrichment Camp for grades 4-7
  • Physical Education Summer School
  • Kindergarten Camp
  • Third Grade Reading Summer School
(Call 492-2520 for more details.)

In addition to all of that activity, there will be plenty of us keeping the place afloat. A fair amount of heavy lifting happens each summer in order to prepare for a new year. We’ll be planning courses of study, scheduling students and staff, repairing and updating computers, maintaining facilities and grounds, and keeping abreast of all of the education-related issues at the Statehouse as the governor finalizes his budget.

The 2011-12 school year will hold its promises and we’re sure it will be as productive as the one we close the books on now. There really is never a dull moment -- and that is a great thing!

P.S. Stay tuned here for news throughout the summer. While I may not blog twice a week, I do promise to keep you posted.

I just checked out Progress Book. It is an amazing tool that takes GMHS into the clouds and the Twenty-first Century. Thumbs up!

About this Blog

We’ve created this forum to start conversations with you, to encourage critical thinking and to nurture the support you give to Groveport Madison Schools.

Research underscores the positive correlation between student achievement and a community that’s involved and well-informed. It’s to that end, I am eager to open a dialogue with you here.

I will share thoughts and ideas about educational trends, children and families, and, of course, news and activities in the district. We want to ensure we are communicating as effectively and timely as possible so will discuss topics that will make a difference to you, our community.
