Student Advisory Councils Held First Meetings

High School Council
Student Advisory Councils conducted their first meetings this week. The Board of Education has selected students from each building level (Elementary, Middle, and High School) to participate in groups that they will meet monthly. Their focus will be self-advocacy and providing student feedback.

This week, Board of Education President LaToya Dowdell-Burger led the meeting for Groveport Madison High School’s Student Advisory Council (SAC) with help from Assistant Principals Tai Cornute and Duane Bland, and Department of Teaching and Learning Director of Innovation and Accountability Mike Morbitzer.

Groveport Madison High School elected officers, including seniors Elliott Phillips (President), Brooklyn Dorst (Vice President), and William Morgan (Secretary).

“I joined the Student Advisory Council to bridge the gap of communication between the higher-ups in the District and our school and students so that they can learn more about the student culture,” said GMHS SAC President Elliot Phillips.

GMHS SAC identified two goals for the year. They will begin work with the Department of Teaching and Learning to increase communication about flex credit availability. They will also work to improve school culture and pride, with a focus on inclusion.

Projects to support these goals will be discussed at their next meeting on March 21, 2024.

Elementary School Council
Elementary students met together at Glendening Elementary for their Student Advisory Council. Board Member Libby Gray led the meeting for elementary students with help from Superintendent Grube, Glendening Principal Curt Brogan, and Director of Communications and Community Relations Kaitlin Duncan.

The Elementary SAC held an open forum discussion on safety and building improvements. Students would like to focus on teaching students the importance of safety in our buildings.

Middle School Council
Middle school students met at GM Middle School North with Board President LaToya Dowdell-Burger, Deputy Superintendent Paul Smathers, and GM Middle School North Principal Chris Mosure for their Student Advisory Council meeting.

GMMS SAC elected officers, including 8th-grade students La’Niaha Echols Taylor (President), Miriam Ferguson (Vice President), Ana Aguilar Rodriguez (Co-Secretary), and 6th-grade student Zae’Briana Stancell (Co-Secretary).

Their council's goals include improving school culture, focusing on diversity education, and improving respect for teachers. They also identified changes to iReady use as a long-term goal.

A video project to support these goals will begin at their next meeting, March 26, 2024, at GM Middle School South.
