Coach Bob Starr Receives Prestigious Larry Larson Coach’s Award

Groveport Madison Schools is proud to celebrate the incredible career and lasting impact of Coach Bob Starr, who was selected as the 2025 recipient of the esteemed Larry Larson Coach's Award. The Columbus Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame recently honored Coach Starr at the 64th Annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet on February 10, 2025, in the Archie Griffin Ballroom at Ohio State University.

Coach Starr dedicated more than 30 years to Groveport Madison Schools, serving as a football coach, educator, administrator, and mentor. His influence extended far beyond the field, shaping the lives of countless students and athletes. Beginning his career as a Principles of Democracy (POD) teacher, he quickly became a pillar of the Groveport community, later serving as an administrator at both Groveport Middle School South and Groveport High School. His leadership also extended to Berne Union High School, where he served as principal from 2004 until his retirement in 2012, during which time the district earned an academic rating of excellence.

On the field, Coach Starr's coaching legacy is undeniable. Over 11 seasons as head coach, he compiled an impressive 65-32-3 record, with 13 of those losses coming in his first two seasons as he built the program. He led the Cruisers to Mid-8 League football titles in 1971 and 1973 and was named Coach of the Year both times. In 1978, he was unanimously named OCC Coach of the Year after a dominant 9-1 season. His tenure also saw the development of standout athletes, including collegiate All-Americans Pat Curto and Jim Feust, along with numerous Division I football players. Beyond the wins and accolades, Coach Starr cherished the electric energy of Friday night football and the deep-rooted community spirit it fostered.

A beloved figure, Coach Starr was honored with the Rarey Award in 2015 for his exceptional contributions to Groveport, despite not being a native. He was also named Favorite Senior Teacher in 1975 and was inducted into the Groveport Madison Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. His legendary storytelling ability brought the "Story of Cruiser" to life, a tale that continues to inspire students, athletes, and alumni. His words about resilience, commitment, and achieving greatness still echo through Groveport events, from football games to Hall of Fame inductions.

We would like to salute the late Bob Starr on his outstanding career and this recent honor. His legacy remains firmly embedded in the spirit of Groveport Madison Schools. His dedication to education and mentorship has even inspired his niece, Rian Burnett, to follow in his footsteps, serving as the principal at Madison Elementary and continuing his legacy of excellence within Groveport Madison Schools.
