District Plans to Resume in-Person Classes on Oct 19

At the September 10 Board of Education meeting, we had a lengthy and deliberative discussion regarding when the District should return to in-person classes (our blended learning model).

Everyone present agreed that the safety of our students and staff must be our primary concern. The second leading concern was that we should avoid moving too quickly to return to in-person instruction only to switch back to a remote learning model if the number of positive COVID-19 cases were to substantially increase as a result of the Labor Day holiday weekend or other factors.

The District had considered resuming in-person classes on September 21, however, after weekly meetings with the local health department, looking at COVID-19 cases in the community, and examining the preparations we still need to complete for a safe return, it has been decided that we will return to in-person classes on Monday, October 19.

It was also believed that with October 19 being the first day of the second quarter of the school year, this would be among the least disruptive transition times for students. It also gives families sufficient time to plan for the transition.

We recognize and understand that this is a difficult time for many families dealing with remote learning situations. Please know we are committed to returning to in-person classes on October 19 unless conditions dramatically worsen, we are discouraged from reopening by Franklin County Public Health, or the governor orders schools to be closed.

In preparation for the return to in-person classes using our blended learning model, we encourage you to review our Responsible Restart 2020 Family Guide, located on our GoCruisers.org website.
