4th Quarter Grading Policy

Groveport Madison Schools District Service Center 4400 Marketing Place, Suite B Groveport, OH 43125 614-492-2520 www.gocruisers.org

Dear Families,

This letter is intended to provide you with more in-depth information about our fourth-quarter grading practices and how final grades will be calculated for the 2019-2020 school year.

We believe that grading is a feedback process to provide communication to a student and family on how the student is progressing and mastering content standards.

As we implement our grading practices in this time of the unprecedented pandemic, we have worked to ensure no harm is caused to our students. We realize that many of our students are confronting challenges including unemployment, caring for siblings, skill deficits, and needing more direct instruction.

Our teachers are frequently monitoring student progress and documenting student engagement and understanding on a daily basis. We are continuing to use Progress Book to communicate with families about student completion of assignments. We are also providing feedback that is specific and frequent that will allow students to self-monitor progress and understand the next steps in their learning. Using Progress Book allows families and students to see daily how students are doing. With this in mind, we will not be sending out interim reports to families on May 8th. Parents are directed to contact teachers with questions. If your child is not completing work, teachers will make many attempts to contact you.

Grading, assessment and feedback play vital roles in the learning process. It is important to continually monitor student understanding and mastery of content. During remote learning, many factors need to be considered and our traditional practices do not provide us enough flexibility. Therefore, alternative practices must be utilized.

4th Quarter Grading and Final Grades will be computed differently this year.

Elementary families will continue to receive feedback using the current standards-based reporting system to indicate student progress toward learning skills and will provide ongoing feedback to students. Students will continue to receive (+, ?, -) for each skill being addressed. No letters grades will be used during remote learning for all elementary grades. We will not have a Spring MAP score to report. This will be left blank. Teachers will provide narrative feedback on student progress under the comment section of each subject area. Teachers will complete sections of promotion, placement, or retention for the next grade level. All report cards will be made available electronically to families.

The mission of Groveport Madison Schools is to build a community of learners, leaders and responsible citizens. _______________________________________________ Every Student, Every Lesson, Every Day

Middle School & High School grades will be computed differently as well. We will not be using the traditional letter grades for the fourth quarter. Students will earn a letter grade for the final grade of the year for semester or year-long courses. Students will earn a pass (P) or an incomplete (denote by a blank space).

Teachers will provide pass (P)/ incomplete (* denote by a blank space) marks based on the criteria they have established within their courses. The incomplete mark will be provided to students that didn’t log in or complete assignments and demonstrated a willful negligence of the class. Students that earn an incomplete mark will have the opportunity for the student to fulfill requirements no later than September 30, 2020. Students will work with their counselors to develop a plan. If they choose to keep the incomplete, their grade will be calculated as such. All Pass (P) grades will convert to 4.0 quality points in a student’s GPA. If the course is a weighted course the quality points will be weighted accordingly (up to 5.0).

Final grades will be computed using the following weights outlined below.

Middle School: The final grade for year-long courses will be configured by the following weights:

Quarter 1 Quarter 2 Quarter 3 Quarter 4

30% 30% 30% 10%

High School: The final grade for year-long courses will be configured by the following weights:

Quarter 1 Quarter 2 Exam 1 Quarter 3 Quarter 4 Exam 2

25% 25% 10% 30% 10% No Exams

The final grade for a semester long course will be configured by the following weights:

Quarter 3 Quarter 4 Exam

75% 25% No Exams

Any high school student that did not earn credit for a course, may take credit recovery courses during summer school. Please contact your counselor or Mr. Grashel about information on summer school.

All report cards will be made available electronically to families through ProgressBook. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher and/or building principal.
