HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR READING SKILLS
Since everyone reads differently, here are some quick and easy ideas to help you better understand what you are reading.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO READ
- Look at the title and pictures. Decide if the story you are about to read is fiction or nonfiction. Think about what you already know about the topic or story and then make predictions.
- If there are questions you need to answer about the reading, look them over before you begin. This will help you stay focused and also will help you read for meaning.
- Make sure you look at chapter titles, headings, and subheadings. Paying attention to these will help you find answers to the questions.
WHILE YOU ARE READING
- Stop and ask yourself questions about what you are reading and try to answer them. Keep predicting what will happen next.
- If something you read doesn't make sense, reread it and think about what the words mean.
- As you read, think about how the information you are reading is like something you already know. Try to make connections.
- When you come to an unfamiliar word, cross check...Do the pictures and/or words look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?/ Use beginning sounds, vowel sounds, and ending sounds/Blend sounds, stretch and read/Skip the word and then come back/Always reread to confirm meaning
- Stop occasionally to check for understanding. Retell the part of the story you've just read. If you can't retell it, reread it.
- Make pictures in your mind of what you are reading. Try to visualize the settings, characters, and order of events.
WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED READING
- Ask yourself what you have learned. Write down some key words to help you remember.
- Summarize the important information in writing, or aloud to an adult or friend.
- Again, try to make connections to what you already know about the subject.
I am sure that you will find it easier to read for meaning if you have a plan before, during, and after you read. Happy reading!
