At the beginning of the year students will be given an assessment to determine his/her spelling group based on his/her needs. Each spelling group will meet with Miss Miller once a week. Each group will be given a feature or spelling rule to study throughout the week. Throughout the week, students are to practice his/her feature/rule at home and at school. Seven days after their group meeting, students will take a written test on 10 feature words.
In addition to the feature list, all students will also have high frequency words to study each week. All students will be given the entire high frequency word list to study at home. The high frequency tests will be given verbally to students. Students are expected to
spell these words correctly each week.
If a student does not spell their high frequency words correctly, they
will be retested until they do.
We have put a lot of
thought into this program on how to best fit our students’ needs. We want our students to learn spelling
patterns and to be able to transfer those patterns to other words, rather than
just memorizing individual words each week. Although it may seem confusing at first, please trust us
