Pinwheels for Peace
Asbury Art Students celebrate International Peace Day on Sept. 21st!

This year art students at Asbury Elementary celebrated International Peace Day, which falls annually on September 21st, by creating an installation artwork of about 400 pinwheels! Pinwheels for Peace is an international project that is done throughout schools and other organizations on International Peace Day with the purpose of promoting peace through the creation and display of pinwheels. In 2010, an estimated 3.5 million pinwheels were spinning all over the world! (Website:http://www.pinwheelsforpeace.org/) Students decorated their pinwheels according to a grade level theme, and incorporated peace sentences onto their pinwheels. We read the books “Paulie Pastrami Achieves World Peace” by James Proimos and discussed the importance of spreading peace, and the power of giving. We also read “The Peace Book,” by Todd Parr to help us answer the question, “What is peace?” in our brainstorming sessions and sentence writing. On September 21st all classes got a chance to install their pinwheels at the front of the school. The result was truly impressive!
