Readiness Checklist

The Ohio Department of Education provides parents with a Kindergarten Readiness Checklist, which can act as a guide for parents to determine if a child is ready for kindergarten. See the chart below for examples of kindergarten readiness:

Early Entrance for Kindergarten

If your child turns five by August 1, you may register them for kindergarten beginning May 1.

If your child turns five between August 1 and December 31, and you feel they may be ready for kindergarten in the upcoming school year, you may have them tested for early entrance. Please review A Parent’s Guide to Early Entrance to Kindergarten for valuable information to help you determine if your child is ready for kindergarten. After reading the guide, if you feel your child is prepared to start kindergarten, complete an Early Entrance application and submit it before May 10. Contact Marcy Ragland at (614) 916-1173 with questions about Early Entrance Testing. According to the Acceleration Policy, only children who pass this test and are good candidates for early entry will be eligible to start kindergarten in the fall.

If your child turns five years old after December 31, they are not eligible to apply for Early Entrance Testing and must wait to enter kindergarten until the following fall.

If your child is six by June 30 and has not attended any school, you may apply for permission to have your child “skip” kindergarten and go directly to the first grade. Our school district will need to test them. Contact our Welcome Center at 614-491-8288 for assistance.

How to Enroll for Kindergarten

We've made registering students as easy as 1, 2, 3 using SpeedyStart, our online enrollment system.

Start your online enrollment process by clicking the SpeedyStart logo to the right. Complete and sign all forms and upload your required documents.
After completing and signing all forms, an enrollment specialist will review your application and uploaded documents. If forms are complete and documents are uploaded as required, we will process your application in the order received. Failure to complete and upload documents as required will delay the application process and prompt an email with time-sensitive, next-step instructions as to what is needed to complete your process.
Once the application process is complete, we will send you a confirmation email that includes the school your child will attend, transportation-related information, and other details to help your child have a great start in Groveport Madison Schools.
